Discernment, the Holy Spirit and the early Church

Luke writes in Acts of the dramatic appearance of the Spirit that marks the beginning of the Church (Acts 2:1–13). Jesus is no longer physically present and the promised era of the coming, indwelling and empowering of the Spirit begins. In this remarkable incident, the possibility of Christian discernment is also born. As Luke records the unfolding history of the Church in Acts, we see the important role the Spirit plays for those early believers seeking to embody God’s will (emphasis mine in all cases):

Act 15:28: “For it has seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay on you no greater burden than these requirements…”

Acts 13:2: “While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’”

Acts 16:6–7: “And they went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia. And when they had come up to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them.”

Acts 16:9–10: “And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing there, urging him and saying, ‘Come over to Macedonia and help us.’ And when Paul had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go on into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.”

Acts 18:9: “And the Lord said to Paul one night in a vision, ‘Do not be afraid, but go on speaking and do not be silent…’”
